ECU SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS
The School of Fine Arts at East Central University houses the more artistic departments within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The departments of Art + Design : Media + Communication (ADMC) and the Performing Arts are housed in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center that boasts 25 classrooms, three computer labs, the Dr. Arthur W. Kennedy Band Room, the William C. Thrash Video Studio, the Pogue Art Gallery, the Inasmuch Sculpture Garden, the Chalmers Herman Theatre, the Peshehonoff Scene Shop, a Recording Studio and Ataloa Theatre that seats more than 1,080 patrons. In this well-equipped environment, students are sure to be able to grow their creative skills and explore interdisciplinary collaboration.
Within the ADMC Department we offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with concentrations in Studio Art, Art Education, and Graphic Design. A minor is offered in Game Design and Art. We also have a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication with concentrations in Media Production, Advertising and Public Relations and Strategic Communication. With certifications in Social Media Management.
The Performing Arts Department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Music with concentrations in Instrumental Music, Instrumental Music Teacher certification, Vocal Music, Vocal Music Certification and Music Industry. Performing Arts also offers degrees in Theatre with concentrations in Musical Theatre and Theatre.
ART + DESIGN : MEDIA + COMMUNICATION
A quick glance at this department will reveal students striving to develop their own artistic styles while also maintaining a tight-knit community. Their work ranges from traditional to contemporary. Students exhibit their work in both student and professional exhibitions. While being led by an active faculty, students also take an active role in influencing and
motivating one another.
Within the Art Program, students can pursue a bachelor of fine arts with concentrations offered in Studio Art, Art Education and Graphic Design. The concentration in Studio Art prepares students for positions as an artist or for further study in fine arts graduate programs.
Living in the information age, it is vital to know how to inform the masses be it through traditional means, electronic, or video and audio. Media + Communication prepares students for careers in media industries, government, business, or to enter graduate programs by offering two concentrations and two minors to students committed to the study of mass media and strategic communication. Graduates have skills employers need in our information-sensitive society.
Performing Arts majors participate in a broad variety of activities. They perform and teach stage productions, represent the university in intercollegiate speech and debate competition, and participate in both the American College Theatre Festival and the American College Dance Association Festival. Majors can choose from Theatre or Musical Theatre. Minors are offered in Theatre and Musical Theatre as well.
In Music, students are provided a musical foundation and professional preparation for selected major fields in music and cultural enrichment for both the campus and community. ECU offers performance opportunities for all students, regardless of major, through membership in various ensembles including bands, choirs and chamber music groups. Study in Opera is also available. These degree programs contain a variety of concentrated areas that include Teacher Certification and Music Business.
