ADA – Two Ada sisters, one an East Central University student and the other headed to the University of Oklahoma, were the recipients of scholarship awards from the Oklahoma Veterans Council and the Mid-America Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America in a ceremony held Monday.
ECU student Charlsey Foster and soon-to-be OU freshman Breanna Foster were each presented a $300 check during a ceremony in the Estep Multimedia Room of the Bill S. Cole University Center on the ECU campus.
The sisters are the daughters of disabled veteran John Foster, who participated in Veterans Upward Bound and is an Ardmore resident.
“They were each individually graded for applications, transcripts, community service, writing a short essay on why they would like to achieve the scholarship and a copy of (their father’s) discharge papers,” said Scott Ellis, government relations director for the Mid-America Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. “There were five (finalists) that had perfect scores. We don’t even look at the names and all the judges rated the top five. As we were reviewing the names we found out that we had sisters in the top two.”
Charlsey is majoring in early childhood education and is possibly looking to go into special needs education as well. She was a part of Ada High School’s Leadership Program and volunteered for Project Admission, which promotes safe driving and buckling up, and reading to children. She has also served as a caregiver at Kinder Kollege Daycare.
Breanna was also a part of Ada High’s Leadership Program and helped solicit donations of $1,500 toward tornado relief efforts. While playing softball and soccer at Ada, she was part of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and participated in a Christmas project to help out underprivileged children.
