The scholarship was established through the ECU Foundation, Inc. in 1986 through a donation from the Audre Chapman family for a student majoring in education.

East Central University student Kenzie Akers (right), of Stratford and Pauls Valley High School, was presented the Don and Ethel Clawson Scholarship by Sharon Cunningham at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The scholarship was established through the ECU Foundation, Inc. to assist ECU students who plan to go into the teaching profession. It is awarded to an upperclassmen who has been admitted to the teacher education program and who has maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA.
McAFEE RECEIVES DCT GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
.East Central University student Sierra McAfee (right), of McAlester and Calvin High School, was presented the DCT Graduate Scholarship by Dr. Phyllis Isaacs at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The scholarship, established through the ECU Foundation, Inc., was set up by an anonymous donor for the College of Education and Psychology, to be awarded to a graduate student with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and enrolled in three hours or more.

East Central University student Brittanie Mobley (right), of Washington, Oklahoma, was presented the Dr. John Densford Award for Academic Excellence by Dr. Jessica Koch at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The award, established through the ECU Fiundation, Inc., is named in honor of Dr. John Densford, who taught at ECU from 1959-1983. It is awarded to a student who has completed 45 credit hours, has been admitted to the teacher education program and has maintained a cumulative 2.75 GPA or a 3.0 GPA in the last 30 hours.

Fenton served many years as the principal of the Glenwood Early Childhood Center in Ada. Her son, Brad, and other family members developed the scholarship, through the ECU Foundation, Inc., in order to honor Fenton and her love for early childhood teaching.

East Central University student Kourtney Grantz (center), of Bakersfield, Calif., was presented the Billie Fathree Floyd Physical Education Scholarship by Jason Prather (left) and Billie Fathree Floyd at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The scholarship, established through the ECU Foundation, Inc., is specifically for kinesiology teacher certification majors. Floyd was an instructor at ECU and at the ECU Lab School, Horace Mann. She served in the Oklahoma State Senate from 1984-84. The scholarship was established in her honor by family, friends and colleagues.

The scholarship is awarded for a senior or graduate who displays leadership qualities and has at least a 3.0 grade-point average. Dorothy Higginbotham was an ECU alumna who understood and recognized the value of higher education and established this scholarship through the ECU Foundation, Inc. as part of her estate planning.

The recipient of this scholarship must major in special education and have high moral standards, integrity and concern for others. John was a senior at Byng High School when he died in a tragic automobile accident. This scholarship was established through the ECU Foundation Inc., by family and friends.
BLOUNT RECEIVES LEONE & PAULINE LANOY SCHOLARSHIP
East Central University student Tyler Blount (left), of Lawton, was presented the Leone and Pauline Lanoy Centennial Graduate Education Endowment Scholarship by Pauline Lanoy at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The scholarship, established through the ECU Foundation, Inc., is awarded to an education student working on his/her master’s degree. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required. Leon and Pauline were inducted into the ECU Educators’ Hall of Fame in 2009 and were recognized as ECU’s Distinguished Philanthropists in 2008. They established the scholarship to assist master’s degree students because of their strong belief in the value of higher education and the teaching profession.

They have five children, all of whom graduated from ECU.

DAFFERN RECEIVES DANIEL MINNICH MEMORIAL STUDENT TEACHING SCHOLARSHIP
East Central University student Michelle Daffern (left), of Mustang, Oklahoma, was presented the Daniel Minnich Memorial Student Teaching Scholarship by Dr. Nanette Schmitt at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The scholarship is awarded to an education student during his/her semester of student teaching. Minnich was an ECU student who died during his student teaching semester. The scholarship, set up through the ECU Foundation, Inc., was established by his family and friends in his memory. Yearly funding is provided by a golf tournament in Minnich’s name.
ANGELL PRESENTED WITH JESS & TRUDY NANCE SCHOLARSHIP
East Central University student Emily Angell (left), of Osage Beach, Mo., was presented the Jess and Trudy Nance Scholarship by Dr. Bill Caruthers at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The scholarship was established through the ECU Foundation, Inc., and was endowed by Jess and Trudy Nance’s sons, Haskell and Bobby, in their memory. Jess and Trudy received their bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ECU and taught in rural schools of eastern Oklahoma for a combined 82 years.
MATTHEWS RECEIVES DR. DONNIE & SHIRLEY NERO STUDENT TEACHING AWARD
East Central University student Jamie Matthews (left), of Ada was presented the Dr. Donnie and Shirley Nero Student Teaching Award by Dr. Jack Paschall at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. Donnie and Shirley Nero were two of the first African-American students to attend ECU in the early 1960s. They specified that this scholarship, established through the ECU Foundation, Inc., be presented to a deserving student teacher with preference for students representing a racial minority population. The Neros have influenced Oklahoma higher education and they provide yearly funding to assist a student who will be teaching in the near future.

Paschall has been a well-loved professor at ECU since 1970. He was a Linscheid Professor and was inducted into the Oklahoma Educators Hall of Fame in 2009. The scholarship, established through the ECU Foundation Inc., is given to a graduate student who exemplifies excellence in passion and commitment to the profession.

The scholarship, established through the ECU Foundation, Inc., honors Reese’s memory and love for the teaching profession. Reese taught at the Ada Middle School for 17 years and among her many loves was the “Olympics of the Mind.”
WATSON PRESENTED WITH MILDRED RIDLING SCHOLARSHIP
East Central University student Angel Watson (right), of Shawnee, was presented the Mildred Ridling Scholarship by Dr. Jessica Koch at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The scholarship, established through the ECU Foundation, Inc., is awarded to a fulltime education major who has completed at least 45 hours of study and has maintained an overall grade-point average of at least 2.7. Ridling was a longtime employee of ECU, serving as dean of Women. The scholarship is established in her honor and memory.
McAFEE RECEIVES DIANA SHANNON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
East Central University student Sierra McAfee (right), of McAlester and Calvin High School, was presented the Diana Shannon Memorial Scholarship by Dr. Shelli Sharber at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The scholarship, established through the ECU Foundation, Inc., is awarded for a graduate student, currently teaching in a rural public school, with preference for students who have graduated or are from Murray and Garvin Counties in Oklahoma and working toward a degree in library media or reading. Shannon was a longtime educator and the scholarship was established by her family, friends and colleagues in her memory.
MAYFIELD PRESENTED WITH J.W. & CLARA ZIMMERMAN SCHOLARSHIP
East Central University student Kristina Mayfield (left), of Pauls Valley, was presented the J.W. and Clara Zimmerman Scholarship by Sharon Cunningham at ECU’s Spring 2016 Department of Education Awards Luncheon. The scholarship, established through the ECU Foundation, Inc., is given to an education major that has shown leadership qualities and has expressed a desire to continue graduate studies. J.W. Zimmerman was principal of Horace Mann Lab School. He was the first person to obtain a master’s degree at ECU and his family has had a very visibly influence on higher education in Oklahoma.
