East Central University senior Tyler Rowsey has earned the Robert W. Sledge and H.Y. Benedict Fellowship, it was announced recently at the National Alpha Chi Convention in Alexandria, Va.
Rowsey, from Allen, Oklahoma, claimed the award after placing first at the convention for his presented paper on “Investigating the Mechanism of Action of a Novel Antifungal.”
The $3,500 fellowship will apply toward Rowsey’s studies this fall at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. Two fellowships, worth $3,500, were handed out at the convention while 10 more, valued at $2,500, were presented.
The Sledge Fellowship is named for Dr. Robert Sledge, who served on the National Council for 24 years, 1973-87 and 1989-99, and 12 of those as president. He also is author of the history of Alpha Chi’s first 75 years. The Benedict Fellowship honors Dr. Harry Benedict, the society’s first president.
Rowsey, who majors in both biology and chemistry with a minor in mathematics, is part of ECU’s Presidential Leadership Program and is a part of the McNair Scholars Program. He was also the recipient of the Raniyah Ramadan Scholarship and presented work at the Fourth Annual Raniyah C. Ramadan Neuroscience Symposium on Jan. 28.
