Dr. Michael Scott, professor of business administration in East Central University’s Harland C. Stonecipher School of Business, was selected for the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Region 6 Teaching Excellence Award for 2017.
For the third year in a row, an ECU faculty member from the Stonecipher School of Business has been honored. Dr. Stacey Bolin was chosen for the award in 2016 and Dr. Thomas A. Zeni in 2015.
“I was excited to hear about being named as the Region 6 award winner,” said Scott. “It is such an honor to be recognized by our accreditation body in this manner.”
Scott was picked for the award for Region 6, which consists of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana. He will receive a medallion and cash prize at the ACBSP National Conference in Anaheim, California in June and will be recognized with 10 other regional winners. All 11 are finalists for the ACBSP National Teaching Excellence Award, which will be announced in Anaheim.
“As an educator, Dr. Scott challenges his students. He sets high expectations and holds them to that level throughout his courses. Students know that when they enroll in one of his courses, they are expected to perform,” said Dr. Charlie C. Jones, chair of ECU’s Department of Business Administration. “Dr. Scott is one of our more demanding professors. However, what he demands from the students, he is also willing to supply. Throughout his courses, he pushes himself to teach each course better than the last time and develop and implement new methods to reach the students.”
Scott earned a Ph.D. in economics from Clemson University in 2012 with his primary fields of interest in international finance, international trade, empirical international trade and economic growth. His research centers around the causes and effects on banking crises, and more recently, the relationship between ethical behavior and firm valuation.
“The administration and my colleagues at the Stonecipher School of Business had a big part in this,” Scott said. “This is the third year in a row that a professor from our department has received the honor. It speaks to the success of our department and the freedom and opportunities that we are given to succeed.”
Scott is a member of the American Economic Association, the Society of Business Ethics, and has been teaching various levels of economics, finance, business ethics, and statistic since 2002. He earned a bachelor of business administration in economics and international business and a master of arts in research/applied economics from the University of Oklahoma in 2003. In addition to his academic appointment, he was named the director of the Oscar L. Parker Center of Ethics at ECU in 2015.
“In the four years that Dr. Scott has been at ECU, he has proven himself as an effective educator and valued colleague,” Jones said. “Through his eagerness to contribute, he has played an important role in the success that both the department and the School of Business has experienced during this timeframe.”
The ACBSP Associate Degree Commission established the International Teaching Excellence Award in 1995 to recognize outstanding classroom teachers. In 2002, the Baccalaureate Degree Commission created a similar award to recognize excellence in teaching at the baccalaureate/graduate degree level. ACBSP is the only specialized body for business schools that presents an award recognizing excellence in teaching, open to application by the entire membership.
