Representing East Central University and serving as a delegate for the United States, Dr. Mara Sukholutskaya took part in the XIII International Congress of Teachers of the Russian Language and Literature (MAPRYAL) in September in Granada, Spain.
The venue for the event was the Palace of Congresses. University of Granada was a local host.
The MAPRYAL Congress, among the largest forums of Russian educators in the world, meets once every four years. The one in Granada included 1,100 participants, representing 60 countries. Sukholutskaya is a board member for the ACTR/ACEELS (American Council for Teachers of Russian) which she represented as a delegate.
Sukholutskaya, director of Russian Studies and Global Education at ECU, made a paper presentation entitled “Let’s Get Acquainted: Educational Game Quartet: Faces of Russia”, a part of a session on Methods of Teaching the Russian Language.
The paper received a very enthusiastic response from the audience in which a petition was made to the chair of the session to allow more time so the audience could ask more questions and get more details on the educational game usage.
The full text of the paper is published in the MAPRYAL 2015, Volume 10, pages 979-984. The Congress’ materials have been compiled and published in 15 volumes.
“It was really encouraging to see and meet so many colleagues who teach Russian language, literature and culture all over the world,” said Sukhoutskaya.
The American Council for the Teachers of Russian underwrote Sukholutskaya’s major expenses such as airfare, congress registration, etc. The ECU Foundation Inc., provided assistance to defray some of the expenses related to the trip.
The event also featured the opening of a monument to the greatest Russian poet and writer Alexander Pushkin. The MAYRYAL General Assembly selected Kazakhstan as the location for the next congress in 2019.
