ECU SCREENS opens East Central University’s Foreign Film Festival with “My Perestroika” on Friday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. in the Raymond J. Estep Multimedia Center of the Bill S. Cole University Center.

The films are free and open to the public.

ECU SCREENS is collaborating with Sigma Tau Delta and The Honors Student Association, with support from the Startalk grant, to show the Peabody Award-winning documentary “My Perestroika.”

The documentary follows five ordinary Russians living in extraordinary times – from their sheltered Soviet childhood, to the collapse of the Soviet Union during their teenage years, to the constantly shifting political landscape of post-Soviet Russia.

“It not only evocatively captures the Russian spirit and the yearnings of a generation, but it also masterfully chronicles the historic collapse of the Soviet Union and its complex aftermath” (David Lewis, San Francisco Chronicle).

For three years ECU was awarded the Startalk grant to host a Russian language camp for high school students from Oklahoma and other states.  The name of ECU’s Russian summer program is “In Search of the Firebird: Connecting Generations through Tradition.”  The purpose of Startalk Programs is to promote among American young people languages that are critical to the security of the United States.  Russian is one of those languages.

Screening a Russian film “Moya Perestroika” is one of five planned post-program activities that allow students to maintain the connection with Russian language and culture after the residential portion of the program is over.

“My Perestroika” is the first in a series of foreign films that will be presented by ECU SCREENS this spring. ECU SCREENS will present four films throughout February for ECU’s Foreign Film Festival. Door prizes given out at each screening will include Russian cultural items and food samples as well as gift certificates from the Hampton Inn (one free night), Hotshots, Cinemark Ada, Truffles and Swirls, Nacho Biznez, Asahi, Pigskins, Amber’s Sweet Shoppe, and Mojo’s Coffee Bar.
