The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education approved a 5 percent tuition increase Friday for East Central University students for the 2011-12 academic year. ECU did not raise any student fees.

Undergraduate tuition will increase by $110.70 more per semester, based on a typical 15-hour semester. Graduate students enrolled in a typical 12-hour semester will face an additional $107.76 increase per semester.

ECU President John Hargrave said ECU’s tuition increase is among the lowest of the six universities that make up the Regional University System of Oklahoma. ECU’s Student Senate supported the tuition increase, he said.

ECU also raised tuition by 5 percent last year, which was lower than most other state colleges and universities. The increases are necessary because state appropriations continue to decline, Hargrave said.

Other RUSO schools are Northeastern State, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southwestern Oklahoma State, Northwestern Oklahoma State and the University of Central Oklahoma.
