East Central University’s Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Program is hosting a series of Academic Boot Camps throughout portions of the Eastern half of Oklahoma in the coming weeks.

The Academic Boot Camps are one-day workshops designed to assist military veterans, guard members and reservists who would like to explore the options and resources for college or training at a vocational or technical school.

Topics addressed include: choosing a major and deciding on a career goal, application process, financial aid process, academic preparation and campus resources.

The first free workshop will be conducted on Tuesday, June 19, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Room 315 of the Russell Building on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant. The program will run to approximately 3:30 p.m.

Other dates and locations for Academic Boot Camps include: June 26 in McAlester, July 10 in Shawnee, July 17 in Claremore and July 24 in Tulsa. Locations in those cities will be announced soon.

The Academic Boot Camp addresses the mission of the VUB program which is to provide supportive services to military veterans, guard members and reservists to enable them to enter or re-enter a vocational/technical school or a 2- or 4-year college anywhere the veteran would like to attend.

Specifically, VUB can help veterans explore career options, find a school with an appropriate program of study and assist with the admission process to include: obtaining copies of transcripts, paying application fees, etc.

VUB can assist with understanding the cost of attendance, completing applications for financial aid, VA education benefits and other sources of aid to fund the veteran’s education.

Additionally, VUB can help veterans prepare academically by developing skills and study habits. The program is designed to set the veteran up for success so he or she can get into school and complete a degree or certificate.

VUB is a TRIO grant program funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
