The Center for Advancement of American History at East Central University is opening its Fall Preservice Colloquium to the public Oct. 12-13 [FRIDAY-SATURDAY] to celebrate Oklahoma's Centennial.
The center and its Teaching American History Grant projects will present the colloquium on "Celebrating Oklahoma/Teaching American History: Infusing Oklahoma History and Culture into the Classroom."
All sessions will be held in the Estep Multimedia Center on the first floor of the University Center. Sessions on Friday will run from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
ECU professors Linda Reese, Tom Cowger, Ken Hada and Robert Newcomer and a local history organization will bring their expertise to such topics as Oklahoma art, music and literature. Other topics include native peoples in Oklahoma, black townships, cowboys, Oklahoma socialism and Oklahoma physical and human geography.
Special guests Alvin Turner and Davis Joyce, retired ECU professors, will present sessions on Oklahoma music and alternative views of Oklahoma, respectively, on Friday evening. P.A.S.T. (Preserving Area Stories in Time Foundation) will perform "The Best Kept Secret in the West" at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The center and the TAH Grants host two preservice colloquia each school year for current ECU teachers-in-training and area educators. Presenters will offer suggestions and techniques on how to infuse the rich history and culture of Oklahoma into the school curriculum.
