Eight students from Ada, Byng and Latta will be among the 81 junior high and high school students from across the state presenting research papers today [THURSDAY] at the state meet of the Oklahoma Junior Academy of Science. The OJAS meet and the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair are held annually at East Central University.
Student research papers were certified earlier at regional meets throughout Oklahoma.
Latta students Claire Chandler (from left), Casady Burns, Lorenzo Charqueno, Jacie Sellers and Mishana Ellison will present their research papers Thursday and Friday at the state meet of the Oklahoma Junior Academy of Science at East Central University. Also presenting will be Carlee Henderson of Latta (not shown), Jenna Huling of Ada High School and Hollie Danker of Byng High School.
Jenna Huling, a junior at Ada High School, will present her paper, “Enhanced Adsorption of Arsenic on Aquifer Solids: Impact of Oxidative Treatment of Aquifer Solids,” in the Environmental Science category.
Hollie Danker, a junior at Byng High School, will compete in the Mathematics category with “Special Pythagorean Polygons.”
Six students from Latta will compete. They are senior Lorenzo Charqueno, “A Study of the Relationship of Plants and Grasshoppers through the Fungi They Distribute Between Them” (Zoology); sophomore Casady Burns, “A Study of Bacteria Susceptibility to Coliphage with Bacteria Amylase Treatment” (Microbiology); and sophomore Claire Chandler, “A Study of the Effect of UV Radiation on Saccharomyces cerevisiae and DNA Repair Through Photoreactivation” (Microbiology).
Also from Latta, sophomore Carlee Henderson, “The Effect of Pesticides on the Chemotaxis of Dugesia tegrina” (Environmental Science); and 9th grade students Mishana Ellison, “An Investigation into the Factors Affecting the Dispersion of Oil in Water Ecosystems” (Environmental Science), and Jacie Sellers, “A Comparative Study on the Electromagnetic Radiation Output from Cell Phones” (Physics).
