In honor of the holiday, a city-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service will be held from 9 a.m. until noon on Monday, Jan. 21.
Because the day is a federal holiday, many consider it to be a day off. Members of King’s family have urged that his service to our country be honored by considering it ‘A Day On, Not a Day Off’.
The City of Ada is coordinating the service effort which will consist of picking up trash and debris throughout the city.
Volunteers are urged to bring gloves and wear work clothes. They should go to East Central University’s Centennial Plaza, which is located in front of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center, by 9 a.m. The first 20 volunteers will receive a free t-shirt for the event.
Following the cleanup at noon, a lunch of barbecue sandwiches and coleslaw will be served to the volunteers at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. A short educational program will be offered at 12:30 p.m.
The project is coordinated and financially supported by ECU’s Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society. The City of Ada Multiculturalism Committee and Ada Sunrise Rotary Club are also supporting the project.
