Free bike and tattoo contests, a motorcycle art exhibit and the opportunity to see pre-1916 motorcycles participating in the coast-to-coast Motorcycle Cannonball endurance run will be part of the Motorcycle Art Expo Sept. 18 and 19 [SATURDAY AND SUNDAY] at East Central University in Ada.
The contests and Motorcycle Cannonball pit stop will be Sept. 19 [SUNDAY] on the Centennial Plaza in front of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. There is no charge to enter the contests or attend the expo.
Students in East Central University's Sculpture II class hold their favorite trophies so far as they continue to turn motorcycle parts into the one-of-a-kind trophies for the Motorcycle Art Expo at ECU. Winners of motorcycle and tattoo contests will receive the trophies following those competitions on ECU's Centennial Plaza on Sept. 19 [SUNDAY]. The ECU students are Josh Mullennex (from left) of Shawnee, Pamela Filipelli of Ada, Dinah Boydston of Macomb, Mary Coon of Konawa and Eric Hollingsworth of Ada.
Trophies for the bike and tattoo contests will be one-of-a-kind art made out of motorcycle parts by ECU art students. Trophies will be awarded for first place and runner-up in all categories. Best of Show trophies will be awarded for both contests.
Bike contest classes include American Stock, American Pro-Stock, American Bagger, American Custom, American Scooter, American Vintage, Asian Cruiser, Asian Sport Bike, Asian Enduro, Asian Scooter, Asian Vintage, European Vintage, European Scooter, European Sport Bike, Rat Bike and More Than Two Wheels (but based originally on a motorcycle). Entries in vintage classes must be more than 30 years old.
Tattoo contest classes are Best Black Work, Best Gray Shade Work and Best Color Work.
Registration for the contests will be held on Sept. 19. Judging will begin at 3 p.m.
Some 50 riders signed up for the Motorcycle Cannonball, which began Sept. 10 in Kitty Hawk, N.C., and pits man and vintage machine against distance and environment until they reach Santa Monica on Sept. 26. The riders will arrive at ECU about 12:45 p.m. Sept. 19 for a lunch stop before leaving around 2 p.m. to head to Lawton for the night.
The Motorcycle Cannonball is named for Erwin "Cannonball" Baker who set his first record in 1914 by riding from coast to coast in 11 days on an Indian.
"Rally on the Row," an annual scooter- and motorcycle-related art exhibit at the IAO (Independent Artists of Oklahoma) Gallery in Oklahoma City, is on exhibit in ECU's Pogue Art Gallery through Sept. 30.
"Bun Burner," an independent film by Will Boggs of Ada, an Emmy award-winning cinematographer, editor, photographer, producer and writer, will be shown continually from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days in the Chalmers Herman Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.
