Serbian pianist Milica Jelača Jovanović will perform Saturday [MARCH 5] at East Central University in the ECU Piano Series sponsored by ECU’s Music Department. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ataloa Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

Both the concert and a master class she will conduct for ECU piano majors are free and open to the public. The master class will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday [MARCH 4] in Faust Auditorium.

Born into a family of accomplished musicians in Belgrade, Serbia, Jelača Jovanović began giving recitals at the age of 8. She has concertized as a solo recitalist and chamber musician in the United States, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Serbia and the United Kingdom. She also has been an associate professor of piano and coordinator of the keyboard area at Western Washington University, Bellingham, Wash., since 2004.

Besides winning numerous Serbian and Yugoslavian national piano competitions, Jelača Jovanović won prizes at several international competitions, including at the inaugural 2005 Iowa International Piano Competition and the first prize at the 23rd Bartók-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition in Virginia in 2003.

 Following her studies in Belgrade, Jelača Jovanović earned her master of music degree and artist diploma at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow and her doctorate in piano performance at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
