Dr. Christopher Bean, assistant professor of history and Native American studies at East Central University, was honored earlier this spring by the Texas State Historical Association.
He received the H. Bailey Carroll Award for the best article that appeared in the association's Southwestern Historical Quarterly publication. His article was titled "Death of a Carpetbagger: The George Washington Smith Murder and Stockade Trial in Jefferson, Texas, 1868-1869."
Bean was one of 11 people honored with awards and fellowships for outstanding research, teaching and scholarship in Texas history. Recipients are reviewed and selected by TSHA committee members with academic and Texas history backgrounds.
Bean joined the ECU faculty in 2008. He holds bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of North Texas.
