All scholarships require full-time attendance (12 hours for undergraduate; 6 hours for graduate) unless indicated otherwise.
All scholarships require a 3.0 cumulative GPA unless indicated otherwise.
All scholarships are for fall and/or spring semester only (summer not included) unless indicated otherwise.
All Biology scholarship recipients are recommended by the department, with final approval by the ECU Foundation Scholarship Committee.
Any exceptions must be approved by the department chair and the Foundation Scholarship Committee.
1950’s SCIENCE FUND (Biology but also awarded to Chemistry, Math, and Physics)
This scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior Biology student who has maintained a minimum 2.75 GPA. Preference will be given to students who do not qualify for significant federal financial aid. This scholarship was established by an anonymous ECU alumnus who attended medical school, and who wanted to assist students who were interested in furthering their education.
SHELBY JANE BAYS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to an upper-level student who is preparing for a career in the dentistry or medical profession by majoring in Biology, Physics, or Chemistry. Priority will be given to majors in the previously stated order with preference given to graduates of Davis High School in Oklahoma. Recipients must maintain a minimum 3.1 GPA and preference will be given to students whose cost of attendance is not totally covered by scholarships, grants, or other fund sources that will not require repayment. Shelby Bays was a pre-dental student attending ECU at the time of her death. Her parents established this scholarship in her memory in order to assist other students in reaching their career goals.
BRILES SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded based on need and a minimum 2.5 GPA. Originally established as part of the Federal Student Loan Program, this scholarship was transferred to the ECU Foundation in 1995.
CARLOCK SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to students who are majoring in a health- or hospital-related field. Applicants are required to have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and must have established a permanent residence in Carter, Love, Marshall, Murray, or Jefferson counties.
DR. WILLIAM A. CARTER SCIENCES ENDOWMENT
This fund will be allocated at the discretion of the Dean of the College of Health & Sciences. Funds are to be used for field trips, materials for research, travel for presentations, etc. with preference given to group outings and/or projects. Individual recipients receiving support must have a declared major of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Health Science, or Physics to qualify for reimbursement of expenses. Students and/or faculty members will be reimbursed for expenses after providing qualifying documentation to the ECU Foundation through the College of Health & Sciences.
CLAUDE CARTER PRE-MED/PRE-DENT ENDOWMENT
This fund will be allocated at the discretion of the Dean of the College of Health & Sciences. Funds are to be used to provide reimbursements for expenses related to medical school or dental school entrance exams (MCAT)(DAT) for current, full-time, ECU students. Preference will be given to students who show need. Students will be reimbursed for expenses after providing qualifying documentation to the ECU Foundation through the College of Health & Sciences.
DR. JAMES CLARK SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Biology department. Dr. Clark is an ECU alumnus and was a dentist in Ada for many years.
DR. TERRY W. CLUCK TRI-BETA BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in Biology who has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. The recipient must also be an active member or officer of Tri-Beta. Preference will be given to those who are research participants. This scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in honor of Dr. Cluck, for his service to the university, and the Biology department.
DR. BILL AND SONDRA COLE BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in Biology who has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0. The recipient must also have a good work ethic, exhibit good moral character, and show evidence of an active Christian faith. Dr. Cole served as ECU’s president from 1989-2006 and this scholarship was established by his family, friends, and colleagues in honor and memory of his service to the University.
DCT COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be available to all students in the College of Health and Sciences, with priority given to students pursing a master’s degree in a discipline housed in the College of Health and Sciences at the time of the award. Recipient must maintain a minimum 3.25 GPA and be classified as a junior or above. To receive this scholarship, applicants must provide a plan for a community service project (preferably a project that benefits the Ada community) that will be completed during their junior year and that is verified by a mentoring faculty member. Preference will be given to students providing evidence of community service during their freshman/sophomore year(s). For the scholarship to be renewed during the students’ senior year, they must complete a community service project in collaboration with mentoring a faculty member during their junior year or the student must have presented the activities and results of one of their previous community service projects at a state, regional, national, or international conference during their junior year and provide an acceptable update for the current service project.
DELTA DENTAL OF OKLAHOMA ORAL HEALTH FOUNDATION PRE-DENTAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a student who is classified as a junior or senior, has declared a Pre-Dentistry major/track/program (or equivalent), has a 3.5 GPA, has demonstrated financial need, and is not an employee or immediate family member of an employee of Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation.
J.G. DUCKETT PRE-MED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a student planning to attend medical school, preferably from the Konawa area. Dr. Duckett was a Konawa native and established this scholarship to assist ECU students.
DR. BENNY AND RITA EDWARDS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to students majoring in Pre-Dentistry or Pre-Medicine, preferably from the Konawa area. The recipient must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above. This scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Benny Edwards in honor of their parents’ tremendous support and strong emphasis on education.
FRANCISCO-HATCHETT SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to Pre-Med students and those who plan to pursue scientific research on the graduate level. It must be awarded equally to male and female students. Hallie Brown Ford, ECU alumna, established this scholarship to reward academic excellence in the areas of pre-law, pre-medicine, and scientific research. It is named after two of her favorite teachers when she was in attendance at ECU.
SHANA HACKWORTH/HEATHER MARCO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a student from the McAlester area who is planning to attend medical school.
HIGGINBOTHAM FAMILY BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a senior Biology major who has maintained a minimum 3.0 gpa. Dorothy Higginbotham was an ECU alumna who understood and recognized the value of higher education and established this scholarship as part of her estate planning.
DR. THOMAS MCKNIGHT SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Biology department. Dr. McKnight taught biology at ECU for several years and this scholarship was established by family, friends, and colleagues in his memory.
MILLSAP HEALTH PROFESSIONALS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to attend medical school. Dr. Mark Millsap, an ECU alumnus, has established this scholarship in order to assist students in their pursuit of a medical degree.
DON NOBLE AND ELMER BROWN BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Biology department. Both Dr. Noble and Dr. Brown taught biology for several years at ECU and this scholarship was established after Dr. Noble's death by family, friends, colleagues, and former students.
DR. CARL OSBORN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to a Junior or Senior student planning to attend medical school and who has maintained a cumulative 3.3 GPA or above. This scholarship may also help defray the cost of the MCAT exam for the student, one time. Dr. Osborn was a long-time member of the Ada medical community and this scholarship was established by his family, friends, and colleagues in his memory.
FRED AND MARY PFEFFER SCHOLARSHIP
(Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Health Science, Nursing, Chemistry)
This scholarship will be awarded to one student in each of the listed categories, requires a minimum 3.25 GPA, and will be awarded for up to eight consecutive semesters as long as all scholarship requirements are met. The Pfeffer’s were long-time residents of Ada and have shown tremendous generosity in assisting ECU students.
HARVEY PRICE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Biology department with preference to students who plan to attend veterinary school. Dr. Price was a veterinarian in Ada for several years and he established this scholarship to assist ECU students who follow in his footsteps.
DR. RANIYAH RAMADAN SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to continue scientific research on a graduate level. Dr. Ramadan was an ECU alumna and this scholarship was established by her family after her death.
RAMSAY PRE-MED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Biology department. Dr. Ramsay was a long-time member of the Ada medical community and this scholarship was established by family, friends, and colleagues in his memory.
ESSIE ROARK COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be available to all students in the College of Health and Sciences, with priority given to students pursing a master’s degree in a discipline housed in the College of Health and Sciences at the time of the award. Recipient must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA and be classified as a junior or above. SBC SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to students in the areas of math, science, or engineering. Originally established by Southwestern Bell, this organization has been contributing to the ECU Foundation since 1993, and this scholarship was established with proceeds from a grant awarded in 1999.
DR. DON STAFFORD SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding student in the sciences. Dr. Stafford was a long-time professor at ECU and this scholarship was established by his sons in his honor and memory.
DR. JAMES A. THOMAS SR. SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship will be awarded to a student who is planning to attend dental school and who has maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA, with preference to students from Poteau, Quinton, Wetumka, or Ada. Dr. Thomas was a long-time dentist in Ada and also served as the Foundation’s Executive Director. This scholarship was established by his family, friends, and colleagues in his memory.
WATSON FAMILY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP (Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics)
This scholarship will be awarded to students with a declared major of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, or Physics. No preference is given to the order. Funds can be used to defray the cost for research presentations at state and national professional conferences - first preference. Funds can also be used for scholarships for students with the declared majors above that have leadership skills and are involved in research - second preference. This scholarship was established by the Watson-Maile family to honor excellence in research and learning.
